The message of Rev. M.J. Divine (Father Divine) has seldom been the object of serious study even though his pretensions to deity and social activism in Harlem and Philadelphia received wide publicity during the nineteen-thirties and forties.
This thesis attempts a serious study of Divine's message. It proposes to locate the intellectual roots of Father Divine and his Peace Mission Movement in the tradition generally referred to as New Thought. Through a careful analysis of Divine's life, his philosophy and its sources, and his vocabulary, the thesis seeks to demonstrate the consonance of Divine's message with that of New Thought.
